A decade of research from Harvard scientists suggests lithium plays a vital role in Alzheimer’s disease. They found that the depletion of lithium in the brain, due to its interaction with amyloid plaques, may initiate early brain changes and memory loss. Promisingly, tests on mice using novel lithium compounds designed to avoid plaque binding successfully reversed Alzheimer’s-related brain damage and restored memory. Notably, these effects were achieved with much lower lithium doses than are typically used in psychiatric applications.
