When Online Safety Laws Feel Like a Weight: The Mental Health Side of Age Verification

As a content creator who shares pieces of my world online, I’ve come to understand that the internet can be both a lifeline and a minefield—especially when it comes to mental health. So when I hear about new laws like the SCREEN Act, designed to protect kids by requiring age verification on adult sites, I can’t help but feel a mix of relief and anxiety.

On one hand, keeping young people away from harmful or inappropriate content is an important goal. But on the other, the ways these laws are enforced — particularly through mandatory ID checks, biometric data, and AI monitoring — can create a heavy atmosphere of surveillance and mistrust.

For creators, this means added pressure. Will our work be unfairly flagged or restricted because of vague rules? Could honest conversations about identity, mental health, or sexuality be misinterpreted as “inappropriate” simply because they don’t fit a neat category?

For viewers—especially young people struggling with their sense of self—the fear of being monitored or having to prove who they are online can feel deeply isolating. The internet is often the first place where many find community and support, sometimes around difficult topics they can’t discuss elsewhere.

The constant watchfulness can lead to stress, anxiety, and feelings of invisibility or erasure—as if algorithms and policies decide who is “allowed” to be heard, rather than people themselves.

I worry about the unintended consequences: that in our effort to protect, we might inadvertently shut down crucial spaces for growth, understanding, and healing.

Mental health is about safety—not just physical, but emotional and psychological. It’s about being seen, heard, and accepted. As laws like the SCREEN Act move forward, it’s vital that we consider not just the technical fixes, but the human impact. Because behind every click, every video, every post, there’s a person navigating their own story—and that deserves care.
