The Unseen Impact of Tragedy: Coping with Fear and Anxiety After the Manhattan Shooting

On July 28, 2025, a shooting occurred in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, resulting in the loss of four lives, including that of a New York City police officer. While the incident may have unfolded several blocks away from my own daily routines, the ripple effects of such a tragedy are deeply felt, even by those who are not directly involved. As someone who calls New York City home, the event has left me grappling with a deep sense of fear and unease—a feeling I know many others in the area share.

Living in a city as vast and vibrant as New York, it’s easy to feel somewhat detached from the violence that occasionally makes headlines. But when something like this happens, especially in such a familiar and bustling part of the city, it challenges that sense of security. Suddenly, even the most mundane activities—walking down the street, entering a building for work, or simply riding the subway—feel fraught with a sense of uncertainty. How can you trust that you’re safe when violence like this can strike at any moment, without warning?

I’ve found myself constantly replaying the details of the event in my mind: the gunman’s motives, the police officer who sacrificed his life, the civilians who were caught in the crossfire. While the shooter, Shane Devon Tamura, may have had his own personal struggles, including possible links to mental health issues like CTE, the aftermath of his actions impacts all of us. It’s hard not to feel the weight of such an event when it happens in your own backyard.

What I’ve noticed most, though, is how such an incident doesn’t just affect those directly involved—it changes how you view your surroundings. I’ve caught myself second-guessing my steps, looking over my shoulder more often, and wondering if I’m truly safe when walking around the city. This sense of vulnerability, while not based on any immediate threat to myself, is no less real. It’s the kind of fear that comes from knowing that a random act of violence can shake your sense of normalcy.

For anyone who has experienced a similar feeling of dread after a traumatic event, it’s important to recognize that these emotions are valid. It’s not uncommon to feel unsettled or anxious after hearing about a shooting, even if it didn’t happen to you personally. The trauma of living through such an event, even indirectly, can lead to heightened anxiety, hypervigilance, and an overwhelming sense of helplessness.

In moments like these, it’s crucial to take care of our mental health. Acknowledge your feelings of fear and anxiety, but don’t let them control you. Talk to someone about what you’re going through—whether it’s a close friend, a therapist, or simply a supportive community. Remember that it’s okay to feel unsafe for a while, but it’s also important to take steps to rebuild your sense of security, both internally and externally.

This is also an opportunity to discuss the broader issues of mental health and the effects of trauma. In this case, the suspect’s mental health struggles seem to have played a significant role in the violence, and it’s a reminder of how important it is to prioritize mental health care—before crises like this take root. It’s too easy to forget how the pressures of life, combined with mental illness, can have devastating consequences if left unchecked.

As we process the aftermath of such events, it’s essential to keep these conversations open. Acknowledge the fear, but work together toward understanding, healing, and prevention. We owe it to ourselves, and to those who have been impacted, to make sure that we address these issues before another tragedy unfolds.
