Woeful Wednesdays #2: The Silent Suffering – How Stigma Prevents Treatment

Despite growing awareness of mental health issues, stigma continues to be one of the largest barriers preventing people from seeking treatment. The negative stereotypes surrounding mental illness have led to discrimination in workplaces, schools, and even within families. These societal attitudes often result in individuals suffering in silence, fearing that reaching out for help will lead to judgment or ridicule.

A recent study commissioned by BetterHelp reveals that one in three Brits avoid seeking mental health support due to the stigma of appearing “weak.” The survey of 1,000 adults found that 21% believe therapy seekers are mentally weak, a sentiment most prevalent among Gen Z (25%). Overall, 35% fear judgment, while 25% worry that seeking help could affect employment. Despite 85% valuing mental health as much as physical health and 78% recognizing the importance of support, many prefer to manage issues independently due to societal pressure and stigma. (The Sun)

Even in the workplace, stigma remains a significant issue. The 2025 NAMI Workplace Mental Health Poll shows that while many respondents are supportive of their coworkers’ mental health concerns, stigma remains a barrier to the way workers navigate their own mental health needs. (NAMI)

To combat this, it’s crucial to continue normalizing conversations around mental health, providing education about mental health, and ensuring affordable, accessible care for all. Everyone deserves the opportunity to live their best life, and that starts with making mental health a priority in both our personal lives and public policies.
