Rising Above: How Seether’s ‘Rise Above This’ Became My Anthem for Resilience

Living with a disability—be it mental, physical, or both—often feels like navigating a storm without a compass. There are days when the weight of it all threatens to pull me under. But amidst the chaos, I found solace in an unexpected place: Seether’s song “Rise Above This.”

Written by lead singer Shaun Morgan, the song was a heartfelt attempt to uplift his brother Eugene during a period of deep depression. Tragically, Eugene passed away before he could hear it. This backstory imbues the song with a poignant depth, transforming it into a beacon of hope for many, including myself.

The lyrics resonate profoundly:

“Call your name every day when I feel so helpless
I’ve fallen down, but I’ll rise above this, rise above this doubt.”

These words mirror the internal battles I face daily. The feeling of helplessness is all too familiar, but the chorus serves as a reminder that falling isn’t the end—rising is possible.

The line “I’ll mend myself before it gets me” speaks to the proactive steps we take to manage our conditions. It’s about acknowledging our struggles while also committing to healing and self-care.

What makes “Rise Above This” particularly empowering is its authenticity. Morgan’s personal connection to the song adds a layer of sincerity that many listeners, including myself, find comforting. It’s a testament to the power of music to articulate feelings that are often hard to express.

For those of us navigating the complexities of disability, this song isn’t just a track—it’s an anthem. It encapsulates the struggle, the pain, and most importantly, the resilience required to face each day.

In moments of doubt, when the weight feels unbearable, I revisit “Rise Above This.” It serves as a musical reminder that while the journey is arduous, rising above is within reach.

If you’re seeking a song that validates your experience and reignites your inner strength, I wholeheartedly recommend giving “Rise Above This” a listen. Let it be the soundtrack to your resilience.
